February 2019 Meeting

The AAUW Corpus Christi Branch meeting was held on February 2, 2019, at the William F. White Library on the Del Mar College East campus.  Before the speaker was introduced, a special tribute was given to Audrey Jones – AAUW member since 1970 – in celebration of her 98th birthday.  After congratulations and well-wishes, the birthday cake was shared and enjoyed by all.

AAUW Branch speaker, Dr. Sandine Sanos, Associate Professor at Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi.

Betty Maroney, chair of the Book Finders Committee, introduced our speaker, Dr. Sandrine Sanos, who is an Associate Professor of Modern European History at Texas A&M University.  Dr. Sanos earned her Ph.D. from Rutgers University in 2004, and she serves as the coordinator of the Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program at TAMU-CC. Dr. Sanos’s presentation, “Writing in the Shadow of War and the Holocaust: Simone de Beauvoir and Anna Langfus, 1960-1963,” painted a picture of women’s experiences during this time, as depicted by Simone de Beauvoir, a famous French writer, philosopher, and feminist, and by Anna Langfus, a Polish/French author who was a concentration camp survivor.

After the program, a presentation was made to the 2019 Sue Stanford Scholarship recipient.  Dr. Robert Wooster, Professor of History at Texas A&M University introduced Shelby Gonzalez who is working on her master’s thesis in history.  Dottie Ewing, AAUW Branch President, presented Shelby with the $1,500 scholarship.  Shelby expressed her gratitude to the AAUW Branch and described how meaningful it was to receive the assistance.
