The 2018 Membership Rush was held on Sunday, September 9, at the First United Methodist Church, amid the welcoming afternoon showers. Guests were introduced, and several new members joined. After a social mixer involving pennants from everyone’s alma mater, President Dottie Ewing introduced the Board of Directors. Board members then provided a short report for their areas of responsibility, detailing the programs scheduled for the year, the community outreach activities planned, the book sale schedules, AAUW Funds, and the variety of interest groups formed for the year. In addition, members received their copies of the annual yearbook.
President Ewing also introduced Janet Blanke who is chairing the new STEM committee. Janet invited members to volunteer for the committee, which will be formulating plans that support AAUW’s goal to inspire young women into the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
AAUW member Sandra Heatherley announced that the Corpus Christi League of Women Voters is planning events for 2020 to celebrate the 100th year of women’s right to vote. The LWV is collaborating with several other community groups, including the AAUW Corpus Christi Branch, on the celebration plans.
After the presentations and refreshments provided by the Board, members enjoyed the time to mix and mingle, while signing up for various committees and interest groups. It was a great start to the new year.
