DEL MAR COLLEGE STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS
In addition to the Sue Stanford Scholarship, the AAUW Corpus Christi Branch awards two $500 scholarships each year to Del Mar College students. Recipients of the Del Mar College scholarships are selected by the College’s Foundation.
2021-22 Del Mar College Scholarship Recipients
The AAUW Corpus Christi Branch awarded $500 scholarships to two Del Mar College students, Samantha Luna and Hope Clark, for the 2021-22 academic year.
A local native of Corpus Christi, Samantha Luna is a returning student who is balancing her studies with being a wife, mother, and small business owner. Samantha is majoring in speech/communications, and she plans to apply those skills to further grow her small business. As a business professional, Samantha’s future plans also include helping other women further their education and careers in our local Coastal Bend community. Samantha thanked AAUW for the scholarship award and said that it helped ease her family’s financial investment in her education.
Hope Clark started her sophomore year at Del Mar College last fall, and she was accepted into the Registered Nursing program. After attaining an associate’s degree in nursing at Del Mar College, Hope plans to work in the field and continue her studies for a bachelor’s degree in nursing. Hope expressed appreciation for the AAUW scholarship and said that it helped lightened her financial burden and reduce her college loan debts.
2020-21 Del Mar College Scholarship Recipients
The AAUW Corpus Christi Branch awarded $500 scholarships to two Del Mar College students, Mackenzie Ortiz and Cassandra Reyna, for the 2020-21 academic year. Although we were unable to meet these students at the Del Mar College Scholarship Reception which was cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions, we are delighted to have provided support to these ladies as they pursue their higher education goals.
Mackenzie Ortiz is majoring in chemical lab technology. She works hard to maintain her grades while keeping a full-time job. Her aspirations are to become a chemical lab technician. She stated that the AAUW scholarship helped her buy textbooks that she needed to complete her classes last semester.
Cassandra Reyna is a single mother majoring in nursing. She also used her AAUW scholarship to purchase textbooks and other supplies needed for her coursework. Cassandra plans to graduate with an associate’s degree in nursing and then attend Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi to work on a bachelor’s degree in nursing. Cassandra mentioned how important her education is, not only for herself and her career, but also to inspire and be an exemplary role model for her daughter.
We congratulate these ladies who demonstrate perseverance and dedication to their educational goals, and we hope there may be an opportunity in the future for our membership to get to know them better.
2019-20 Del Mar College Scholarship Recipients
The AAUW Corpus Christi Branch awarded $500 scholarships to two Del Mar College students, Yasmin Hernandez and Brittany Contreras, for the 2019-20 academic year.
As a dual credit student at Ray High School, Yasmin Hernandez earned 21 semester credit hours before enrolling at the University of Houston – Downtown. She attended UH-D for one year, living through the two-week campus closure following Hurricane Harvey. Yasmin returned to Corpus Christi, and she is majoring in biology at Del Mar College while holding down two jobs. She plans to transfer to Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi to complete a bachelor’s degree in marine biology.
Brittany Contreras, a graduate of Moody High School, is enrolled for her first semester at Del Mar College, studying dental hygiene. She is a full-time student and plans to graduate in 2021. Brittany mentioned that she was able to purchase an array of lab supplies and equipment needed for her program with the AAUW scholarship she received.
Several AAUW Branch members had the pleasure of meeting Yasmin and Brittany at the Del Mar College Scholarship Reception held November 13, 2019, on the West Campus. The scholarship recipients expressed their appreciation of the support they received from AAUW. Members congratulated the recipients and invited them to attend our Branch meetings.
2018-19 Del Mar College Scholarship Recipients
In 2018, the Del Mar College scholarship recipients were Fred Flores and Briana Reyna. Fred is majoring in Addiction Studies, and his five-year plan is to open and operate his own treatment facility. Briana is a first-year student majoring in Nursing, and she plans to become a pediatric nurse, working in a clinic or hospital setting. Both recipients expressed their gratitude for their scholarships, stating that the funds have helped pay for books and other essentials.
2016-17 Del Mar College Scholarship Recipients
In 2016, the Del Mar College scholarship recipients were Laura Brooks and Tory Tokuku-Vitz, who was majoring in Geographic Information Systems.
