The Corpus Christi Branch of AAUW held its regular meeting on Saturday, October 6, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. in the William F. White Library, Room 416, at Del Mar College.
Our speaker was Mimosa Thomas, a community organizer and lobbyist from Corpus Christi, Texas. Mimosa has worked as a volunteer for Battleground Texas and served as a Campus Organizer for the Texas Freedom Network. In 2016, she joined the Friend’s Committee on National Legislation. Her work with FCNL has focused on bipartisan reforms for immigrant rights.
Mimosa’s presentation outlined tangible civic actions that individuals should follow in order to effect change on public policy. She encouraged AAUW members to make personal contacts to members of congress; to write letters to the editor; to become lobbyists; to mobilize community members around an issue of interest; and to participate in voter registration drives, as well as campaign to get out the vote for your candidate.
